2006 NYC Marathon Winners Return to Defend Titles

M Gomes dos SantosJelena ProkopcukaLatvia’s Jelena Prokopcuka and Brazil’s Marilson Gomes dos Santos will return to the 2007 ING New York City Marathon on Sunday November 4th to defend their titles of the female and male winners of the 2006 NYC Marathon. Prokopcuka will be vying for the honor of being the first to win three consecutive NYC Marathon titles since Greta Waitz in 1986. Gomes dos Santos beat out defending champion Paul Tergat at last year’s race in a surprise upset and became the first South American to win a New York City Marathon.

Run Like the City for a Good Cause

Manhattan runners can join Nike’s Run Like the City challenge, which allows them to represent one of three sections of the city – uptown, midtown or downtown in a Neighborhood Challenge.  Runners can log completed mileage on NikePlus.com and it will be added to their respective neighborhood’s total.  For each mile entered, Nike will donate $1 to one of three worthwhile causes: The Fresh Air Fund, Team for Kids and Team in Training. Currently, downtown leads the neighborhoods with more than 112,000 miles logged.

Same Course for Queens Half?

NYRR has updated the calendar and added the information page for Half-Marathon Grand Prix: Queens. The course description for the race is the same as in the past, despite reports earlier this year that NYRR and College Point Road Runners may be unveiling a new, single-loop course through New York City’s largest borough. As usual, NYRR has the “course subject to change” disclaimer posted.

UPDATE: The course description has been updated to reflect the new, single-loop course through College Point and Whitestone.

Tomorrow Night: Tuesday Night Speed Series

Tomorrow night at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island is the Tuesday Night Speed Series. Events include the 1500m, 800m, and 3000m races.
