2010 NYC Marathon Application Available 11/2

The 2010 ING New York City Marathon application will be available on November 2nd, 2009, the day after this year’s marathon. From the official NYC Marathon site:

By adding 12 weeks to the training schedule, NYRR hopes to attract runners from a wider spectrum of ability, from experienced runners to novices — even people who have never run a step.

At NYRR, our purpose is to grow the community and sport of running to promote health and wellness. Of course, the ING New York City Marathon will still be organized to attract the best in the world, the best in each age group, and experienced runners looking for a personal best. But now there’s more room — and more time — for everyone.

Lance Armstrong in the 2006 NYC Marathon

The New York Times reports that cyclist Lance Armstrong has inquired about being a pace setter for Joan Benoit Samuelson during the 2009 ING New York City Marathon, as she did for him in 2006.  According to the article:

He has not trained for a full marathon, according to Mary Wittenberg, the chief executive and president of the New York Road Runners, the race’s organizer.

“We’re very happy to have Lance’s support,” Wittenberg said, but she added, “I’ll be surprised if he runs.”

“Lance had expressed interest through e-mails,” Wittenberg said. “But with a competitive athlete, you can’t pace unless you start the race. We gave him that option, which we are happy to extend. We don’t know if that’s of interest to him.”

NYC Marathon Training Under Way

With just under 17 weeks until the New York City Marathon, many training programs have already begun.  If you still haven’t started a program and are looking for one, New York Road Runners has an online training program provided by TrainingPeaks for $45 and a 14-week training class in NYC directed by Bob and Shelly Glover (authors of The Competitive Runner’s Handbook) which costs from $399-$549.  NYRR has also provided a free  basic guide to training with schedules for six different skill levels.

The New York Times has a free online resource called Run Well, which includes training programs from McMillan, Gallaway, Team for Kids, and New York Flyers.

In The News: NBC & NYRR Strike Deal for Broadcast of NYCM

Reuters is reporting that NBC & New York Road Runners have extended their broadcast and advertising revenue sharing deal for another three years, starting with the 2009 New York City Marathon. NBC will be doubling its national coverage of the race to two hours and the New York affiliate WNBC will be offering more than five hours of race coverage.

2009 NYC Marathon Five Borough Challenge: Working Mothers

This year’s New York City Marathon Foot Locker Five Borough Challenge will feature working mothers from each of the five boroughs of New York City:

One representative will be chosen from each New York City borough to form a team of five runners for the Challenge. The team must run the first 13-miles of the Marathon together, and then they can break away for the remainder of the race.
The Foot Locker Five Borough Challenge team will be treated as VIPs during the pre and post race festivities, and will be featured on the WNBC-TV live television broadcast of the ING NYC Marathon on November 1.

2009 NYC Marathon: Largest Field Ever

The AP reports that the 2009 New York City Marathon will have the largest field ever, with more than 40,000 runners expected to participate. Additionally, for the second straight year, over 100,000 people applied for the race:

Race director Mary Wittenberg, president and CEO of New York Road Runners, says “breaking the 100,000-applicant mark again, in the midst of a recession, speaks volumes” to the importance of running in people’s lives.

Runners can now log in to see if they’ve been selected to run in the 40th NYC Marathon. The NYRR website states that a confirmation e-mail will be sent out on Friday, June 5th.
